There are many pioneers of ecological living and building in the Saugeen. Breathe Easy Cottage itself was custom built to use thermal mass, passive solar, very high insulation and radiant floor heating (a healthier alternative). Many of our friends and neighbours have gone much further, with wind, solar and geothermal technologies and interesting ways of building off the grid (straw bale, stackwall, timber frame, log and more). If a technology, large or small, is intriguing, someone in the region has probably tried it.

There is also a strong alternative community who have been leaders in creating ways of living that serve the community and the natural environment.
